Plans to construct Canada’s most impressive Apple Store have cleared a major roadblock that previously put the entire project in jeopardy. Following a round of revisions, the City of Vancouver’s Development Permit Board unanimously approved a major redevelopment at the Pacific Centre shopping mall, according to Business in Vancouver. The New York-based company said that this latest round of financing is led by Sequoia Capital, with participation from existing investors including Tiger Global, Coatue Management and Hillhouse Capital’s venture capital unit GL Ventures, and is the third round of capital raised within four months, totaling just over $140 million. Six New York residents were charged today after authorities discovered they were attempting to make fraudulent purchases at various Apple retail locations in the Chicago area. According to the Chicago Tribune, the six people were charged in “an organized criminal enterprise.” According to officials, the people would fly into O’Hare International Airport, rent a car, and visit Apple Stores in an attempt to make fraudulent purchases. The suspects used false identities and stolen credit card numbers of various other people around the country in an attempt to make the purchases....

Apple’s streaming web TV service has been rumored for nearly a year now, with reports originating last March claiming that Apple was planning to announce a service at $30-$40 per month. The service was said to feature upwards of 25 channels and be available on the fourth-gen Apple TV. Recently, however, reports have claimed that Apple’s talks with major networks have stalled. Now, speaking to CNN, CBS CEO Les Moonves has confirmed that talks between Apple and CBS have stopped recently....

Apple currently relies exclusively on Samsung for its supply of OLED displays for the iPhone X. According to a new report from The Wall Street Journal, however, China is pushing to become a supplier of OLED displays to Apple as part of its efforts to increase advanced manufacturing… The report says that BOE Technology Group is seeking to supply Apple with OLED displays for future iPhone models. Currently, BOE supplies displays for the iPad and MacBook and is the number one supplier of large LCD screens....

Chinese smartphone sales appear to have strongly rebounded from the coronavirus crisis, as government figures show April sales up 17% year-on-year. In part, of course, this will be pent-up demand from March, when the local economic outlook in the country was much less certain… Reuters reports the numbers. The MPAA has been criticized by Christian groups for its decision to give anti-abortion film Unplanned an R-rating. It came to light last month that the film, which is based on a memoir of the same name by former Planned Parenthood clinic director turned anti-abortion activist Abby Johnson, was awarded the R-rating ahead of its March 29 release date. The news didn’t go down too well with Chuck Konzelman and Cary Solomon, the directors of Unplanned, who called the MPAA’s standards “deeply flawed” and refused to edit their film in a bid to get it awarded a lower rating....

The latest documents posted by WikiLeaks reveal that the CIA has been hacking wireless routers for years. One particular hack, known as CherryBlossom, allowed the agency to monitor all Internet activity of a target, and even redirect their browser to government-created phishing sites … ZDNet spotted the reference. Although the document says that the hack was operational for 25 different models of routers from major manufacturers, it is likely that the real number was much higher....
