“We’ve all been hearing the ‘M word’ an awful lot,” Nvidia’s Omniverse VP Richard Kerris said to reporters this week, referring to the so-called metaverse. Christian Bale thinks Robert Pattinson will be an interesting Caped Crusader in Matt Reeves’ The Batman. Bale of course portrayed the character during The Dark Knight trilogy, and his rendition is considered the best live-action version by many. Warner Bros. officially cast Pattinson in the role of Batman earlier this year, and the film is expected to begin production near the end of 2019. Pattinson beat out Nicholas Hoult for the role, and is replacing Ben Affleck, who portrayed the character in three DCEU films....

Disparate reports this morning shed a little more light on the Verizon iPhone deal we expect to hear about at 11am (Eastern). It seems the deal may cost Verzon as much as $5 billion in subsidies in year one — but is also set to steal share from AT&T while flatlining Android device sales. John Hodulik, an analyst at UBS AG told Business Week he thinks Verizon may sell 13 million iPhones with an estimated $400 subsidy this year — a total of $5....

Coming to America 2 has added another cast member from the original film, bringing back Shari Headley as Lisa McDowell. Released in 1988, Coming to America starred Eddie Murphy as African royal Prince Akeem who, together with his faithful companion Semmi (Arsenio Hall), escaped an arranged marriage and journeyed to Queens to live as a common man and find true love with a “simple” American girl. The film would prove to be another huge hit for the then-red-hot Murphy, grossing $128 million domestically ($280 million adjusted for inflation)....

The Clips app that Apple announced back in March and launched in April doesn’t exactly seem to have set the world on fire. Apple’s description made it seem simple and fun to use: The reviews, however, disagreed … It was described as confusing, complex and lacking a clear purpose. Some suggested that Apple could have more usefully just added the stickers and filters to the Camera app. My colleague Michael Potuck understood why the app could give an impression of complexity, but said it didn’t actually take that long to learn....

Air conditioning firm Carrier has announced its first smart thermostat that works with Apple’s HomeKit feature. Carrier’s Côr thermostat will work with Siri, Apple’s new Home app, and automation in iOS 10. It’s unclear if Carrier will be updating its current line of Côr thermostats through software or if new hardware will be required for HomeKit compatibility. Carrier first introduced its Côr line two years ago. [UPDATE: The HomeKit-enabled Côr thermostat will be new $249 hardware....

Starting in March, cardholders will earn rewards with select merchants near where they live. When it launches, a reward tab will be available in the app where users can see different merchant offerings, the amount of cashback they can earn and monitor how much they’re accumulating. Everything will be handled within the Dayforce Wallet app, and rewards are currently offered with over 100,000 merchants. The rewards are automatically added back into the wallet and can be used with the card....

ChangeWave Research is out this morning with the newest survey based on a poll of 4,163 consumers in June, eleven percent of which were outside the US. The research focused on planned and past purchases of smartphones, showing that Apple’s handset is still the preferred device in spite of Android becoming the top-selling smartphone platform as millions of feature phone consumers in the United States and elsewhere upgrade to their first smartphone, usually a cheap Android handset....

Chaos Walking’s initial cut apparently lived up to its name, as Lionsgate and director Doug Liman’s movie was reportedly deemed “unreleasable” prior to its reshoots. An adaptation of Patrick Ness’ sci-fi novels of the same name, Chaos Walking takes place in a dystopian future world where all women are believed to have been wiped out and a virus allows people the ability to hear other humans and animals’ thoughts. It’s a pretty tricky concept to translate into a film right off the bat, so it’s little wonder that Lionsgate’s struggled to get their movie version off the ground since landing the rights in 2011....
