A research study into use of social media platforms by minors found that upwards of 40% of children under 13 were using them, despite accounts supposedly being limited to teenagers and adults. The research included TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and Snapchat. The study also found that a full third of minors had experienced an “online sexual interaction,” which included being asked for, or receiving, nude photos … Adding to the concern, children are much more likely to simply block those sending inappropriate messages than they are to report them to a parent or caregiver....

After launching Clips for iOS back in early April, Apple is today releasing an update for the social video editing app that adds a handful of notable new features. We also confirmed that the app now has over a million monthly unique users to date. Among the new features, Clips is gaining a bunch of effects that can be overlaid or used to create videos. Included are banners, posters, and overlays including Disney and Pixar-themed additions and 12 new posters with animated text that have been designed by Apple (as pictured above)....

After Spectrum TV launched just last night for Apple TV, the company has now announced a new Apple TV 4K deal for subscribers. Users who subscribe to both Spectrum TV and Spectrum Internet will be eligible to receive an Apple TV 4K for $7.50/month (excluding taxes) for 24 months. That amounts to the standard $180 retail price for the 32GB model. Disney is buying Comcast’s stake in Hulu, giving it full control of the service with immediate effect, although the actual purchase doesn’t complete until 2024 … It follows Disney’s acquisition of 21st Century Fox back in March. Disney started with a 30% stake in Hulu, with the Fox purchase giving another 30%. It later bought AT&T’s 10%, so Comcast’s 30% will give Disney full ownership. Axios reports on today’s development....

My takeaway is that it’s very similar to RescueTime, but a bit more friendly. It’s sort of like if Mint.com were to get into the time management game. Chrometa automates everything that can possibly be automated while still allowing you the flexibility to sort, categorize and manually tweak entries. The big problem with most time management programs is that they end up being distractions in themselves—but once you get your rules, projects and clients set up in Chrometa, it won’t take any more than five or ten minutes out of your day....

China Telecom officially announced it would begin selling the iPhone 4S next month. China Telecom is a major market for Apple, because its 130 million mobile subscribers will now have the opportunity to purchase Apple’s latest smartphone. The iPhone 4S will go on sale on March 9 on China Telecom, and pre-order offerings will start on March 2. China Telecom has almost 200 million customers in Mainland China, including fixed line, mobile and broadband....

Bots are applications designed to automatically perform specific, repetitive tasks online without the need for human oversight. Many bots are set to beneficial tasks such as crawling web pages, for analytics, providing payment services, chatting to website users, and giving them advice or pointing them to the right customer service department – but not all. So-called ‘bad’ bots can be used to scrape user data, send spam, overwhelm a domain with traffic and disrupt services (DoS/DDoS attacks), or perform automatic account access attempts in what is known as credential stuffing....

A former Apple engineer listed as a co-inventor of both 3D Touch and Apple’s Taptic Engine says that he is excited to be joining mapping startup Mapbox to work on augmented reality features … Reuters reported the move. Cieplinski told Reuters that AR and mapping was an exciting combination. Mapbox maps are found in Snap Inc’s messaging app and the Instacart grocery delivery app. Mapbox seems to be going after high-calibre talent in general, also hiring execs from Tesla and Google....
