Update: Apple has told CBS that all the cobalt refiners in its supply chain participate in third-party audits, and that it removes any which fail or refuse. Apple, Google, Microsoft, Tesla, and Dell have all been accused of ‘aiding and abetting’ the use of forced child labor in cobalt mines and being complicit in exposing the children to working conditions resulting in death and serious injury. The five companies are named in a lawsuit brought on behalf of both injured children and the parents of children killed in cobalt mining accidents…...

Update: The Chinese government has now confirmed this date. The iPhone looks set to be launched by China Mobile – the biggest carrier in the world’s biggest country – on Wednesday 18th December, reports the WSJ. While neither the carrier nor Apple have made a definitive announcement, China Mobile has said this is the date it will “introduce a new brand.” China Mobile posters for the iPhone 5s and 5c had leaked as long ago as September, but the deal itself has been a long time coming....

The Chinese government has removed several prominent US tech companies, including Apple, from its list of approved vendors for state purchases, Reuters reported today. The change is hardly unexpected following the government’s response to accusations several years ago that the US National Security Administration had been using backdoors in Apple products to spy on users. Some sources cited by Reuters say that the change may not necessarily have anything to do with security, and may instead be designed to help local companies pick up a larger portion of the government tech market....

Yet another bank has announced today that it is launching its own mobile payment solution. At the Money20/20 conference in Las Vegas today, Chase announced that it is launching Chase Pay. Chase Pay is digital wallet solution similar to Apple Pay that allows users to pay with their phones at retail locations and online (via Re/code). There’s one notable difference between Chase Pay and Apple Pay. Chase’s offering works by giving shoppers a QR code to show to their cashier, while Apple Pay works by using NFC technology to tap and pay....

The method I’ve found that works best (which I learned from my Mom btw), is using a dryer sheet! STOP! Before you run off and experiment, don’t use a fresh dryer sheet out-of-the-box. They found a nifty solution that involves punching in your Dropbox Events RSS feed into CloudHQ. It’s still not quite instant—in my tests, it still takes about 10 to 15 minutes—but it’s a giant leap in the right direction....

Through this functionality, Castro hopes that users will be able to easily discover new and unique podcasts to add to their library. iPhones are significantly cheaper in Hong Kong than mainland China, and it’s not unusual to find people smuggling them across the border. But while the record for smuggling them under clothing is around $150k, that’s nothing compared to the $79.8M worth transported with the help of drones … Reuters reports the find. According to a new report from Curbed Los Angeles, Apple’s long-rumored plans to transform the neglected Tower Theatre in downtown Los Angeles have been confirmed by work permits filed with the city’s department of building and safety.
